The First Annual Charter Chef Competition
Saturday, February 27, 2010
This year’s theme for the competition will be
Spirit of the Caribbean
Rum holds a tantalizingly romantic place in the history of the West Indies. Evocative of balmy trade winds and pirate fore, the facts surrounding its serendipitous discovery remain elusive, shrouded in the mists of undocumented trade and vague 17th century references to bottles of “Kill Devil.” Despite a rough start, the ingenuity of colonial sugar cane planters transformed a worthless by product of the sugar trade, molasses, into a lucrative commodity which inflamed the interest of the New World colonists of America—and pirates too. Rum casks seen traveled from our sunny shores in ships to ports of call north, inspiring the spread of island distilled rums far and wide.
Today, rum’s versatility in cocktails and cuisine remains unparalleled by liquors of nobler pedigree, providing the perfect vehicle for the creative chef. We invite charter chefs to come join us in celebration of the spirit of the Caribbean ingenuity.
Charter chefs of vessels docked at Crown Bay Marina on Saturday, February 27, 2010 are invited to prepare barbeque spare ribs with a complimentary side dish for the grand prize. A BBQ sauce featuring rum as an ingredient must be used to compete. A basket of ingredients will be provided to each contestant sponsored by Bellows International and Merchants Markets.
Two (2) cash prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges for the winners. The First Prize and Second Prize winners names and vessels and those 1st and 2nd runners up will be published in All At Sea. Interested chefs and crews must register seven (7) days in advance. Call or email to register at (340) 774-2255 or email us at info@crownbay.com.

This Coin was provided to us by The Pirates Chest in St. Thomas
The Pirates Chest specializes in authentic treasure coins. From the 15th to the 18th century, the Caribbean was known as the Spanish Main. Over the centuries hurricanes, pirates and privateers took their toll on the mighty Spanish fleets sending vast amounts of treasure to the ocean floor. The latest technology has enabled salvers to retrieve some of these lost treasures. If you are looking for doubloons, pieces of eight, Dutch Ducats, or coins from other European powers of the era you must stop by The Pirates Chest in St. Thomas and visit Dan, Sean and Thaiphoon.
